I went to a few thrift stores in Anacortes this weekend with my grandfather. The best thing I found was this unused Bialetti stovetop espresso maker. It's fantastic and was only $4! Plus I had just received an order of freshly roasted coffee from Brian at Double Shot. So it was a fantastic weekend for coffee.

a few months ago a friend of my sisters asked me to update his iPod off my computer. On his travels to Panama he discovered this band from what he downloaded off my computer. Since I have way more music then I could ever listen to (102G and getting larger) I was so happy to find them. Going to see him and a live band tonight at Neumos. I'm excited because it's a venue I haven't been to yet and it's only 4 blocks from my house!

When I first moved to Seattle, everyone was always constantly warning me about how gloomy the winters are. How I was going to be unprepared etc. It wasn't TOO bad, I got through it and didn't get depressed. The one week per summer that I have spent here up to this point couldn't have prepared me for a whole summer here. I just can't believe how beautiful it is, everytime I look out my window to Elliot Bay and the Olympics it just kills me. PLUS it isn't lost on the people that live here, they treat every nice weather day as
a gift.

For someone who doesn't have cable at home. I've managed to get myself addicted to two shows lately. I think I'm always late to getting into a show because I prefer the instant gratification of seeing an entire series at once.

The first one is Long Way Round. It's about 7 episode series about the 19,000-mile (31,000 km) journey of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman from London to New York on motorcycles. They travel eastward through Europe and Asia, flew to Alaska and continued by road from there to New York. After hearing about it from my copywriter here at work I looked it up at the Seattle Public Library, reserved it then waited patiently for it to come in. It's so great! My favorite is their ride on The Road of Bones in Siberia. Sulzer pointed out last week that there's a new one with them in Africa. It's next on my list.

The Wire. I heard it was fantastic when it first started. Then my friend Jen rented it just before she moved to Colorado. She left it with me to watch on the condition that I return it for her. I'm totally addicted. I love how smart the drug dealers are and how even the "scum" of Baltimore have principals.

I've had these little pots for years and have never used them. I know where I bought them even, Oasis in Stillwater. So 5 years + is how long they've sat on a shelf somewere. My mom has a TON of different succulent plants. So I cut off some babies and planted them a last week. I'm sure they'll outgrow their pots in no time.

My new favorite thing to do is go down to the Market on a Monday or a Friday after work and get a nice big bunch of flowers. This bunch was only $10!! I think prices go down toward the end of the day if flowers are left over.

Andrew Wyeth

I've loved this artist for a while now. These posters have just gone up all around Seattle. Wyeth is an American artist and one of my favorites to see in a collection at a museum. Modern art museums have a ton of abstract work in their collections. For me, Wyeth has always been a nice break from that. My favorite piece "Christina's World" by him is pictured below.

Seattle Art Museum has just hung a small exhibition of some of his finest paintings. Seven great Wyeth paintings from private collections, otherwise never on public view. Next Friday I'm going to see a documentary about Wyeth at SAM. I'm not sure if my favorite is among the paintings, but I've seen it before at MOMA in NYC. I'm very excited about seeing more of his work.

Here is my first, of hopefully many sellable projects. I created this design for a baby onesie for baby Amira (my cousin Laura's new little girl, who I got to meet last weekend) and baby Josiah (my friend Lizzie and Josiah's new son). I used silver ink and printed them on black. They were a big hit with the Braddocks when I gave it to them on Saturday. I sent one to Lizzie and Jo last week. I plan on creating more so place your orders today :)

Tomorrow night Missy, Rachel and I are going to Andrew Bird. I seriously can't wait. Just this weekend I've been listening to Armchair Apocrypha more in depth. I so in love with it. I also can't stop listening to "People Got Lotta Nerve" off the new Neko Case album and a song called "Not Fair" off Lily Allen's new album. I know they are soooo different but I love them equally.

Thursday night I am volunteering for the AIGA show here in Seattle. I'm new to the scene so it will be fun seeing how another creative club organizes and what their dynamic is like. I wonder if I'll be thinking..."that woman is the Libby Bender of Seattle or that guy is the John Amatucci of the Northwest...". I was once an outsider in Tulsa and found my home with ADCT pretty quickly. I know the formula (volunteer for everything until they depend on you) so I bet I can do it again.

Broken Social Scene

I got to see one of my favorite bands last night. Broken Social Scene is a larger band then I thought. In this instance, like with alot of bands I listen to, I had no idea what they looked like before the concert. These Canadians were older then I thought they were.

The concert was at Showbox Sodo and was sold out. I've been to this venue once before to see The Kooks. I have to say the acoustics totally stink and the layout sucks even more. But unlike my previous experience, I really loved it this time. Maybe it was the band. They were very talkative, commented about our new presidential success, and even gave advice about curfews. Overall they were in a great mood and totally rocked. They played all my favorite songs including "Anthem for a Sixteen Year Old Girl", "Stars and Sons" and "Looks Just Like The Sun". They had Lisa Lobsinger as the female singer. Many women have taken turns with the band including Lesile Feist (Feist), Emily Haines (Metric) and Amy Milan(Stars).

So I tried using my new Flip to record a few songs. It was really easy to keep pretty steady, I just couldn't dance. But, tall people kept getting in the way :(

In preparation for my trip to Mexico on Saturday, I bought this. It's called a Flip and its a really light weight and easy to use camcorder for sharing video on the internet. I've played around with it just a little. First thing I noticed is that I love how well it performs in low light. But I DO NOT like the software that comes with it. It is a POS and very pro AOL. Who even uses AOL anymore, that's what I want to know. I don't even see those cheesy cds in the mail anymore. Why? Because who in the world still uses dial up?

Anyway. Back on the subject. I'm going to test it tonight at the concert I'm going to, Broken Social Scene, here in Seattle. I hope that it does better then my little Nikon S2. I got that little Nikon from John 3 years ago. It's so out of date, but the little guys been a trooper. hasn't ever given me any issues. Come to think of it, I think it was one of my first posts on this blog :)

My first screen print done! Here they are on the drying rack. I'm in love with it. It's looks like something that would be fun to put in a child's room. It's definitely not perfect, but that's no biggie. I'm somewhat obsessed with the ocean since moving to Seattle, seems fitting.

Screen Printing Class

I started a printmaking class last night at Pratt. It's the first time I've taken one since 2002. Oh printmaking, how I've missed you! I know realize what was missing from my life for the past 7 years. The class was full at 12 people. Mostly female. I went into the class thinking surely it would take the whole 4 hour class to cover the basics of screen printing. I was pleasantly mistaken. We talked about an hour then she let us loose to do whatever. So I came up with a very quick design. The process is cutting a pattern in a sheet of newsprint then taping it to the screen. Very quick and easy with fast results. So I finished my first screen by 9pm then cleaned up for the evening. The class also gets studio time all day Friday as part of the class fee. So I'll be finishing the print up by Friday evening and will post the finished product then.

My friends Diana, Lisa and I went to Poppy to try it out. It's a pretty new restaurant located at the end of Broadway on Capitol Hill. Plus the Seattle Times recently gave it a good review. My first impression was BRIGHT! This restaurant is incredibly bright with the orange and yellow tables and blonde colored wood everywhere. It didn't really bother me but I do prefer darker lighting. We met about 6 and it wasn't too busy. Then as I sat down the server informed me that all alcohol was 50% off in celebration of the new president. We also ordered food off the bar menu my favorite was the eggplant fries with honey and sea salt. Yummm.

A friend gave me a copy of Noble Beasts a few weeks before it's release. Based on his new album, Jen, Missy and I bought tix to see him at The Moore Theater here in Seattle on Feb 23rd. I've been there once before to see Fleet Foxes. Jen is particularly excited since she's never been.

Slumdog Millionaire

Missy, Jen and I went and saw SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE at The Harvard Exit Theater here in Seattle last week. It's a story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?"

We absolutely loved it. First off, I adore almost any movie set in India or that depicts Indian people. It was a fantastic story about 2 brothers surviving under the most bleak circumstances. The love story is epic and there isn't alot of subtitles if that bugs any of you. The soundtrack kicks ass, Indian music of course, but they included a few MIA songs which was genius. It was like MIA, who wrote those songs years ago, had written them especially for this movie. Overall this is the best movie I have seen in over a year. If it is playing near you, go.

Floods

I wish it would stop raining! I got soaked between my work and Marcos tonight. I only had 6 blocks and I got totally soaked! My dad called from OK while watching The Weather Channel (his favorite channel, it's his favorite reality show) and said there was flooding and I-5 was closed to the south and north. So basically everyone in Seattle is stuck here!

As a side note, I think both my mother and my father missed their calling as weather forecasters. If I'm in WA my dad calls me from OK to warn me about the weather in WA, if I'm in OK my mother in WA calls me about the weather in OK. In the TEN years my mother has lived in Washington, she has called me during every tornado warning, her timing is uncanny she managed to call just when the sirens were going off.

The end is in sight, Friday starts a week of dry weather and even 5 straight days of sun (hopefully)!

The other day I was headed to work and I stopped into an asian gift shop. I was looking around at dishes, cookware and all kinds of strange items when I came across these dolls. A wedding doll set. Which is normal enough. But they each have a small child next to them, they look about 8 years old are so. So who are these children? Are the doll children from a previous marriage or relationship? Are they the brides children or the grooms? Or maybe they each have a child from a previous marriage. How many times have these dolls been married before? How did they meet? Dollieharmony.com? And the biggest question of all, who makes cakes that put on a light show and play music and why didn't Kathy get one for her wedding? Edible or not, seems like a no brainer. I think asian doll manufacturers must be more socially accepting of alternative versions of the typical family unit then the ones I grew up with. Plus they make toy wedding cakes with lights and music!

I had forgotten about doing one of these, but Kathy's list got me thinking about how I would award this years music. Well here is the most anticipated top 24 songs of 2008. Yes there are only 24 instead a nice tidy 25 because 2 songs tied for #1. I couldn't decide which band I am in love with more, Bon Iver or Fleet Foxes. On Saturday, Missy and I are going to my favorite cousin Laura's (pictured on the far left of the photo) baby shower. My father and her mother are brother and sister. Our birthdays are 1 month apart. This was taken at a family picnic in Bellingham when we were 7 or so? Not sure. I'm right next to Laura (of course) then Missy is next and Sarah is on the end. It so funny. Our poses are so typical of our personalities, even as adults. Even Sarah's pose is so like her. She has this child like quality, even now.

Last minute, my aunt asked me to hangout with my two cousins while they attended a fundraiser. So I got over to Shoreline around 6 just as Alice and John were headed out the door. My cousins Violet (8) and Joe (12) were very excited about having me there. We ate pizza, a few pieces of Halloween candy, watched Family Guy (not sure if they are old enough to be watching it) then finished the evening with Harry Potter. We were up a bit later then they usually are (10pm is late on a school night?) but I remember hazing the new babysitter when I was 8. I had a fun night, it was a nice change to working late or going out :)

Well, it's rainy and overcast here in Seattle today. I'm working on website layouts. This is my first experience working in a coffee shop. I rather like it. It's nice to get out of the house and I feel better able to focus without distractions.

I'm currently listening to Fleet Foxes. I didn't blog about this concert yet. Maybe because it was one of my top 5 most amazing concert experiences ever and I wasn't sure where to begin. Saul bought tickets months before he came to visit. He was able to get us 3rd row seats. I had listened to them before the concert. I wouldn't have said I was a huge fan though. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't even know they were from Seattle.

Well I can say I am a HUGE fan now. This band is one of those groups that you HAVE to see live to really appreciate them. The music demands your full attention through the whole concert. I'm glad it was a seated concert for that reason. Between each song there was brief clapping but while they played, you could hear a pin drop. Did I mention it was a sold out show? Do yourself a favor and listen to their new cd, it's my favorite CD of the year. I'm going to try to find you tube footage of the show. I'll post it hear if I find it.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this podcast and buy this book. I was listening to it this morning on the bus to work. It's all great music but the one that stopped me in my tracks was Reinbert de Leeuw version of Satie's Gnossiennes No. 2. I am a HUGE fan of Satie and I love to hear him get exposure, even though he wrote this in the late 1800s.

Crashed Car

For the last week or so since I've been working at a firm only 2.5 or so miles down Capitol Hill, I've been walking either to work or home. Depending on if it's raining or not. I try to pick a different route every time. Yesterday on Pine just off 20th I stumbled upon the Girly Man truck. I'm not sure what happened to these vehicles or why they're sitting on a city street. But it was entertainment for me as I walked home...

After lunch with my aunt Alice a few days ago I went by the Seattle Public Library to get my new library card and also wait for my sister to come pick me up.

This floor is in the first floor check out area of the library. I thought it was really cool with the letters raised up. There are multiple languages featured but they didn't seem to spell or say anything. It might be something the architect created for the building or maybe it's artwork. Not sure. More investigation may be necessary.

Meanwhile I am legal to check out books from the library. A friend said they have a fabulous collection of music (Seattle, go figure). So that will be the first thing on my list next time I go by.

Well I am no longer a Seattle concert virgin. Last night my sis and I went to see Stars for my very first Seattle concert ever. It was at a fantastic venue called The Showbox. I don't think it was a sold out show, but there was a TON of people there. We started the night at The Pink Door and had their yummy pappardelle al ragù bolognese and tiramisu. Then we went to The Zig Zag Cafe for a couple drinks before the show. The show was great and we loved the venue. We had alot of fun, maybe too much fun!

Tonight I get to go to an actual couture fashion show. The firm I've been freelancing for had me design the event's invitation. The designer is Luly Yang. The event starts at 6 with a pre-party. Then all of us from Rocketdog have runway seats and then we get to go to the afterparty with Luly herself. We even get special Luly Signature gift bags! I'll post photos if I get any with the iPhone. :)

Olympic Fake?

It turns out, some of those vivid fireworks were computer graphics created by a team of hundreds of Chinese visual-effects specialists who worked nearly a year to pull it off.

New BOK Center

This is a photo I took yesterday when David, Holly and I took a tour of the new BOK convention center in downtown Tulsa. Caesar Pelli is the architect on the project. They handed over the keys to the BOK staff today so we got in on the last tour that Manhattan Construction did.

The place is totally amazing. 18,000 seats and state of the art everything. Who cares who is performing, it will be an experience just to go. Even though it doesn't open till after I leave, you can bet that I will be back in March for the College playoffs.

Drive-In

I forgot what a blast the drive-in is. Thom, John, Christie, Nicci and I went the other night when we couldn't get tix to The Dark Night at the IMAX. I finally did see The Dark Night and I highly recommend seeing it in that format. I saw it with Saul and Johnny, who had already seen it twice but thought the IMAX was by far the coolest.

Anyway, we packed some beer in the cooler, blankets and chairs and got there around 8:45. We watched Wall-E but I didn't stay for Hancock. Which I had already seen. I would like to do it again before I leave for Seattle :)

Left Field Project’s RIGHTtoLEFT

Tonight at Artifacts:
Right to Left is an exhibition of multi-media art created by artists that are driving the visual aesthetic of today’s pop culture. The exhibit was conceived and curated by Duane Fernandez of Left Field Project. The tour opened in Carrboro, North Carolina at Wootini gallery on May 9th. The next stop for the show will be Artifacts gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma - Opening reception Friday, June 6th. The show will remain in Tulsa for 2 short weeks before it will make its final trip to the Super7 gallery in San Francisco, California - Opening reception Friday, July 18th.

The show's curator, Duane Fernandez, chose specifically to bring this exhibition to cities that are often left out of the crowd. He says, "Shows like Right to Left are abundant in New York and L.A. There's a huge following of people who appreciate this style in places like, Tulsa, and they rarely get to see these works first-hand."

Contributors include:
Andy Mueller - Andy founded OhioGirl, a small design/photo/film studio.
Morning Breath - Brooklyn based Morning Breath, Inc. was founded by Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto in 2002.

Windy Thursday

I left for lunch at noon and ran over to Borders and bought a copy of David Sedaris' new book. He hasn't really come out with anything new since Thom and I saw him speak a few years ago. So I went directly home to my apartment that got power back only yesterday (we had a huge storm on Sunday with 75mph winds) to read. I warmed up a can of soup and got to it. Forty-five minutes later I woke up on the couch with the book on my lap, late for work. It really wasn't boring, I am just still so exhausted from staying at other people's houses while my power was out. I could stay at home during the aftermath of the ice storm because I had heat and hot water, but 75 degree nights without ac is really uncomfortable.

So tonight? I am looking forward to relaxing and reading my book in bed in the comfort of an air conditioned apartment.

Stillwater

I was driving out to my dad's house in Stillwater. The river near the road had just been about a foot over the road for a few days. This was this was the first day it was passable. A strange, small storm had just passed through and as I was passing this farm I saw the rainbow. It was still raining and all I had was my point and shoot camera. But I couldn't get everything in the shot, so I ended up taking 2 similar shots and merging them together. If you look close, you can see the ends of the rainbow.

While I was in Seattle my sis printed a really large version of the image. It looks really cool!

Janet and I hosted a baby shower for Vanessa and John on Saturday at Kilkennys. Here is the tattoo from the shower. It was such a fun invite to do. I really enjoyed creating it. If you know Vanessa, you would know how perfect it was for her. Both she and John have ALOT of tattoos and they are also not finding out what sex the baby is. It's going to be a surprise, which I think is so fantastic :) We had a great time.

Denver was great! We went to the dinner on Friday night, our flight was delayed a bit so we got there just as the presentation was starting. John and I won 2 Gold medals for his identity system and the small books we did. I met lots of Denver creatives and spent some quality time with good friends. Also in attendance were Jimmy (D & P's other partner) and his wife Nicole who is always so fun.

Friday I am heading up to Denver with my good pals Vanessa and John to visit Paula and Dallas and go to the awards show for the Art Directors of Denver. A series of promotional books that I did with John have been accepted into the show. Other things on the agenda for the weekend is the Clifford Still Exhibition at the Denver Art Museum and a walking tour of loDo (lower downtown Denver). Will take plenty of pics!

I just love this radio show. I listen to it religiously. I can't wait till Monday every week. I sit by the computer barely able to sit still while my iTunes downloads the podcast. The stories are incredible and the latest show has to be my favorite in the last few months. It's all about break-ups and how awful they are, though everyone goes through them. If you think about it. My best and oldest friend of 28 years turned 30 this weekend. We ate dinner at a fabulous Brazilian restaurant called Cafe de Brazil (go figure) then out with friends. Saturday we wandered around, took photos, found Wayne's house and went by Edna's for a lunch box and signed a dollar bill. Saturday night we saw Phil play at Tapwerks then Sunday we had a greek meal with Kathy's parents. These photos aren't the best, will load more on flickr soon!

I saw this movie Sunday and absolutely LOVED it. A friend had already sent me the soundtrack which I was addicted to by the time I saw the movie. IAO 24 Works on Paper will travel to five venues throughout Oklahoma. First, it will be at East Central University in Ada during the month of November, 2006. Then the exhibit will travel to Southwestern Oklahoma State University and be on display from mid-December through January, 2007 when it will go to Eleanor Hays Gallery in Tonkawa for the month of February. It is scheduled to be at the University of Tulsa gallery in June, 2007 and will have a closing exhibition in July at the IAO gallery.

The exhibition will be in communities that normally have limited exposure to quality contemporary art and will give statewide exposure to Oklahoma ’s superlative contemporary artists.

Seattle Art Museum just opened a public sculpture park at the end of the piers in Seattle. Missy and I stopped by there when I was in town 2 weekends ago for my step-sister Hollie's wedding. This photo was my favorite of the group because you can see a bird and a plane in the sky above the metal tree. The sculpture is called Split by Roxy Paine.

I had a nice easy Memorial Day weekend. I mostly stuck to Tulsa, got to hang out with friends alot. On Monday I borrowed a lens from my photographer friend John amatucciphotography.com and wandered around Tulsa all afternoon, ducking the rain periodically. This photo was my favorite from the batch, I took it outside my church. Well it isn't really MY church, I'm not a member. It was designed in the 1920s by Adah Robinson. It's 2 blocks from my house and I pass it every day to and from work. I call it my church because I love the building and I'm so lucky to be able to see it every day.

I take ALOT of photographs every where I go, but I barely have any from where I live. So I thought I''d take an afternoon and explore. I just barely got to take photos of everything. There are some more places downtown I'd like to explore, but I am hesitant to do it alone or without permission. (I have learned from Jeremy and Scott's run-ins with the law!!)

Sunday my friend from New Zealand, Geoff, and I went up to Wollaroc. He had never seen bison before, so we traveled the hour or so drive north to the Frank Phillips ranch to check it out. We threw tomahawks, petted horses and goats, saw deer, buffalo, mountain goats, water buffalo, ostrich, emu, and this little lizard. He was just sunning himself on a rock next to the road when I spotted him. He was more then happy to pose for the photo.

Last week we had a great cloud day. I was just down the street from the Cains Ballroom over lunch so I grabbed my camera and took a few shots. Cains is a historic ballroom where Bob Wills started performing 1934. It is my favorite venue to see music in this region. I saw Yo La Tengo there 2 weeks ago. The Faint is performing at the beginning of June, but unfortunately I will be in Seattle.

I sometimes have problems with quotation marks. Somehow between cutting and pasting, they occasionally default to the wrong quotes. Maybe it's a mac thing. I need to learn to spot them when they are wrong. Anyway, I thought this was interesting.

I went to Stillwater on Friday night to visit my dad, step-mom, and Kristen. I was able to spend most of Saturday at the Anthony's home where I got to play and photograph Lucie. I hadn't seen here in 3 months or so. What a surprise to see how much she has grown. She is a happy baby and extremely adorable. Luke is waiting to hear about his bar exam results, which should be Friday. Jen, the happy mom, is busy getting back to work at OSU.

I was walking Sunday night after it had rained most of the day when I passed Madison Ave. in the Maple Ridge neighborhood (where I live). The street has a divider that is lined with Redbuds. I love this street more then any other in my neighborhood. I thought this had an erie feel. Not scary necessarily. Makes me wish I had a tripod though.

OSU Homecoming

Well, it's fall and that means football. I won't actually go to a game (I have carried that tradition since college) but I will go to the homecoming parade! I spent the night at Jen and Luke's house Friday, drank some of Luke's home brewed beer, and went to sleep in Lola's bunk bed. The next morning we went downtown for the parade. The highlights were Calvin and Linda, the Langston University marching band (who had 10 sax players!!) and an OSU energizer bunny float. The weather was actually pretty good, a little chilly but sunny.

This is the view from my mother's deck in Anacortes. They renovated an old bed and breakfast. It has been done for about a year but they have really settled into the house since I last visited. In this photo you can see around 8 islands in the San Juan island chain.

Here is my favorite plant. I've had this orchid since 98. It blooms ever March or April for a month. This year it had 9 blooms, a record!

Pink, White and Rashid All Over was the theme of the Gala we went to Friday. Todd, David, Lisa and I were guests of Marty from Western. It was presented by Target.

In conjunction with the first US solo museum exhibition of industrial designer Karim Rashid, April 28 - September 17. We are going up to see the exhibit again on May 25th with the Art Directors Club. So all are welcome.

Woodward Park

Better late then never. Here are some of the photos I took at Woodward Park on Sunday. It was just about the height of bloom for the azaleas. I also took alot of photos of the Anthony family and their 5 year old daughter Lola. There were so many of those, I only included a few. We also went to the Tulsa Garden Center and looked at their orchid show. I know that Laura Shaw (Kathy's mom) would have LOVED it, I thought of her the whole time. She has 20 orchids!
